I like new year.
The 1st January holds no more magic than any other day throughout the year, and yet, for most of us, we take that day to reflect on where we are in life. Some of us look back in anger, some in regret, some of us remember the amazing times we had, the friends we made, the people we lost and we try to make sense of whatever happened in the last 365 days in the hope of answering one question;
Are we were we want to be in life?
But for me, new year just gives us all a chance to wipe the slate clean. I try to think not of the progress I've made so far or where I came from, but I try to look at 1st January, right now, as the starting point. I ask myself if you were able to start from where you are right now, even 12 months ago, then you'd have had a huge advantage to take into the new year. Because no matter what you achieved or 'failed' to achieve last year, you have undoubtably gathered 12 months worth of lessons and information to be able to make wiser decisions in the future.
We all want a better life, above all, for ourselves, our family and friends. But what does a better life actually mean? Usually a better life is what you can get out of life, mostly more money, more holidays, more time, for some more material objects. But the older I get, the more I believe that a better life is in making someone else's life better!
I wont be wishing to sell more artwork than I did last year, I wont be wishing to buy my favourite car (a duck-egg Porsche Cayenne Sport for anyone who is wondering). My wish this year is to create more and better artwork and tell the story of each piece in a way that people can watch and enjoy. Because that's the best way I can give more to people, by telling stories that make people laugh, cry and just remember their favourite moments.
Having just one goal sounds a bit counter intuitive, but I believe in my work. I believe in myself and I'm extremely lucky to know what I'm really good at. The past 12 months taught me that I have tried too many different things to be successful. I built and invested in a podcast studio, lost a lot of money, I started a youtube channel, started creating acrylic paintings instead of digital. I tried 101 different types of content and what I've gained most out of all of that is that I don't need to try new things any more.
I simply need to focus on the 2 or 3 activities that I'm best at, and that is painting and creating videos. And I am convinced that this is the best way for me to reach my goals, which is, every day, to be a better man and try to make someones day a bit better, even if it's just for 60 seconds whilst you're scrolling on social media.
So if you made it this far and you've interacted with my content even once this year, I thank you. I wish you health, happiness and strength going into 2025.
Be good to each other, but mostly, be good to yourself.
Much love.
Cally
